Wuhan Yuanxi Photonics Technology Co., Ltd. ("Yuanxi Photonics") has recently closed an angel funding round worth tens of millions of yuan, with investors including CASSTAR, Hongshan Capital, Juhua Chuanxin, Wuhan Institute of Technology Innovation (武创院) and Jiangcheng Fund. Following the financing, the company will focus on metasurface optics chip R&D and product introduction, targeting two major application markets: intelligent 3D sensing and data center optical interconnects.
Why did this optics company, founded in late 2025, manage to secure funding? What exactly attracted investors?
Yuanxi Photonics is positioned as an industrialization platform for high-performance metasurface optical technology. Its core team has more than a decade of experience in metasurfaces and micro-nano optics, and has independently built three technological cornerstones: full-wave design and simulation for metasurface optics, full-field, full-parameter automatic optimization, and proprietary nanofabrication processes.

The basic principle of metasurface optics is to use arrays of subwavelength-scale nanostructures to precisely control the phase, amplitude and polarization of light, replacing conventional curved lens assemblies with planar, ultrathin elements to miniaturize and integrate optical systems.
Over the past decade, research in this field has largely remained at the laboratory stage. Manufacturing tolerances, wavelength bandwidth, environmental stability and wafer-level packaging yield have consistently been the key barriers between academic results and commercial products.
In 2026, a joint research team from Sungkyunkwan University and POSTECH in South Korea developed a roll-to-roll nanoimprint technology that achieved a manufacturing rate of 300 visible-light metalenses per second, at costs comparable to or even lower than conventional refractive optical elements. The results were published in Nature.
Meanwhile, a demonstration of 8-inch wafer-level near-infrared all-dielectric metalenses shows that the wafer-level mass-production path is moving from concept to engineering validation. The work was carried out by teams including the Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study, UCAS and Wuhan University of Technology, using a step-and-repeat nanoimprint strategy that cut master-mold costs by more than an order of magnitude.
Substantial progress in mass-production technology is reshaping how capital prices the metasurface optics sector, shifting the bet from technology direction to process implementation capability. Yuanxi Photonics' emphasis on "specialty semiconductor process technology" is a direct response to this logic.
Market demand is also accelerating the process. According to The Business Research Company, the global "3D sensing technology" market is projected to grow from $3.22 billion in 2025 to $3.73 billion in 2026, a compound growth rate of 15.6%, driven by consumer electronics innovation, industrial automation and the continuing demand for precise depth perception in autonomous driving.
The value of metasurface optical elements in 3D sensing lies in their ability to integrate beam-steering functions into an extremely thin planar structure, replacing conventional mechanical scanning or bulky lens assemblies.
Data center optical interconnects are another track with greater explosive potential. According to the Global Metasurface All-Optical Components Industry Panorama Report (2026), demand for metasurface polarization controllers and mode multiplexers in communications and data centers is growing at an annual rate of 67.8%.
The competitive environment facing Yuanxi Photonics is far from relaxed. In the metasurface optics patent landscape, 3M leads with 41 patent families, followed closely by Lumotive with 25, while Avalon Holographics (17), Apple (16), MetaVC (14) and Metalenz (13) are stepping up their efforts.
Among China's metasurface optics commercialization players, some companies have already secured tens of millions of dollars in funding for LiDAR and 3D sensing and moved into product delivery. Yuanxi Photonics entered with an angel round worth tens of millions of dollars, and its capital efficiency will determine whether it can complete the critical leap from process validation to customer adoption within the window.
Metasurface optics is at the point of shifting from a technology narrative to a capacity narrative. Capital is no longer paying solely for academic frontiers; it is starting to ask: What is the process yield? What is the per-chip cost? When will customers adopt it?
Yuanxi Photonics' angel round is a signal, but the real test is not the amount raised. It is whether the company's metasurface optical chips can complete their first commercialized delivery in a 3D sensing or optical interconnect application within the next 12 to 18 months. That will be the watershed moment for metasurface optics moving from the lab to industrialization, and the outlook is promising.
