AI briefing

Shanghai Fanchuangwei Technology's high-transparency optical AR glasses lens project has settled in Huangyan, Taizhou, to be carried out in two phases by Fanke Technology (Taizhou), with total investment of about RMB 550 million. Phase one, at about RMB 150 million, plans to complete an innovation center and pilot production line by 2027. Phase two, at about RMB 400 million, targets annual output of 100 tonnes of high-purity silicon carbide optical material by 2028. Aimed at AI glasses and AR terminals, the project covers the full chain from optical materials and etching processes to optical devices.

Why it's recommended

The source gives the investment figures for both phases, production line timelines and a target of 100 tonnes of silicon carbide optical material per year, useful for gauging the pace of silicon carbide waveguide industrialization.

The industrialization of silicon carbide optical waveguides is accelerating, with AAC Technologies, GoerOptics, Sunny Optical and other manufacturers successively launching silicon carbide optical waveguide solutions with a field of view of 50 degrees or more. The industrialization path for silicon carbide as an optical wafer material for AR glasses is becoming increasingly clear. At this industry milestone, the high-transparency optical AR lens project of Shanghai Fanchuangwei Technology Co., Ltd. has officially landed in Huangyan, Taizhou.

On October 12, Lu Mingyu, deputy secretary of the Party Working Committee and director of the Management Committee of the Huangyan Economic Development Zone, led a delegation to inspect the R&D and experimental base of Shanghai Fanchuangwei Technology in Nantong, Jiangsu, and signed a letter of intent for cooperation with the company. On October 14, the two sides completed coordination on matters including the selection of factory premises.

The project will be carried out by Fanke Technology (Taizhou) Co., Ltd. in two phases over a three-year period, with a total investment of approximately 550 million yuan. Phase one involves an investment of about 150 million yuan, with construction planned to start within the year and a science and innovation center and pilot production line to be completed in 2027. Phase two involves an investment of about 400 million yuan to build a 50-mu production base, with the goal of achieving an annual output of 100 tons of high-purity silicon carbide optical materials by 2028. The company will first conduct small-batch testing during the laboratory R&D stage in Huangyan, gradually advancing toward scaled mass production.

According to Zeng Lixuan, head of Shanghai Fanchuangwei Technology, the project targets new-generation smart terminals such as AI glasses and AR devices, focusing on the R&D and industrialization of high-transparency optical AR glasses materials and new optical devices. It aims to build a complete system spanning optical-grade high-transparency materials, customized processing, etching processes, optical devices and customer validation.

The technical team of Fanke Technology (Taizhou) is composed of renowned overseas materials scientists together with researchers from domestic universities and research institutes. Using optical high-transparency materials based on a completely new technical route, combined with grating etching processes, the company produces high-transparency customized AR lenses. The company plans to establish Shanghai as its R&D and operations center while coordinating the construction of its industrialization base in Taizhou.
