Photonics.com's October 16 weekly briefs roundup covers multiple photonics industry developments, including a $19.2 million US Army Research Office grant to the University of Central Florida. The briefs also note that GF will reallocate $955 million from existing CHIPS Act funding to accelerate investments in silicon photonics, silicon germanium, and advanced packaging at its Malta and Burlington fabs.
GlobalFoundries (GF) has been selected to operate two semiconductor fabrication facilities at its Malta, N.Y., site under a U.S. Japan initiative providing up to $21 billion in funding. The first fab, expected to begin construction in 2026 and come online in 2029, will add approximately 900,000 300 mm wafers of annual manufacturing capacity. A second fab could add similar capacity. Separately, GF will reallocate $955 million from its existing CHIPS and Science Act award to accelerate investments in silicon photonics, silicon-germanium and advanced packaging at its Malta and Burlington, Vt., facilities. The projects aim to strengthen domestic semiconductor supply chains and support growing demand from data centers, communications...
